A trade fair hostess is a service professional whom exhibitors book for reception, registration, guest care and appointment coordination at their stand. The job is usually assigned by the day, mostly as short-term employment or a mini-job, and can be planned flexibly around your studies.
At ucm, getting started takes five steps, from profile to first payout:
Exhibitors do not book certificates, they book behaviour. These points decide whether you get booked and booked again:
The floor is set by law: the statutory minimum wage in 2026 is 13.90 euros gross per hour (BMAS, German Federal Ministry of Labour). ucm pays above that, the hostess job page states from 16 euros per hour plus supplements, depending on the assignment.
Sample calculation: a trade fair day with 8 paid hours at 16 euros comes to 128 euros gross, a four-day fair to 512 euros. Whether deductions apply depends on the contract model: as short-term employment, up to 70 days per year are free of social security contributions, in a mini-job up to 603 euros per month remain tax-free. What is left net is calculated in detail in the article Hostess Job: Requirements and Hourly Pay.
Short-term employment is exempt from social security contributions if it is limited to a maximum of 3 months or 70 working days per calendar year and is not pursued professionally (Section 8 (1) no. 2 of the German Social Code Book IV, SGB IV).
The day starts before the halls open with the briefing at the stand: who is the contact person, which appointments are scheduled, where is the cloakroom, how does registration work. After that you stand at the reception, greet visitors, check guest lists, hand conversations over to the sales team and keep lounge and counter in order.
The typical stumbling blocks on a first assignment are not the tasks but the logistics: getting to the right hall entrance, exhibitor pass, break rules, shoes. The checklist for your first trade fair job goes through everything point by point.
304 trade fairs took place in Germany in 2025, with 191,990 exhibiting companies and 12.75 million visitors (AUMA, German Trade Fair Industry in Figures, 2025). According to AUMA, the peak month is March with more than 50 trade fairs in 31 days.
Assignments are where the large exhibition grounds are. ucm staffs over 100 trade fairs at ten exhibition cities: Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart. In Berlin alone, over 8,200 students are in the pool, and the exhibition grounds comprise 27 halls on 190,000 square metres (Messe Berlin). Koelnmesse has 284,000 square metres of hall space in 11 halls, the Munich exhibition grounds 18 halls with 200,000 square metres.
Which assignments are currently open you will see in the app after registering. The role itself is described on the page part-time job as a hostess: reception, guest lists and guest care at trade fairs and events.

Registration and reception tasks, where a clear briefing structures the work, are a good fit for a first assignment. After your first documented assignments with good feedback, you are also in the running for more demanding stands with VIP care or appointment coordination.
