In summer 2026, promotion jobs for students are one of the most sought-after side job options in Germany. They pay between 14 and 22 euros per hour - clearly above the statutory minimum wage of 13.90 euros since January 2026. Anyone who knows the rules gets to their first assignments at trade fairs, events and promotional campaigns quickly, even without prior experience.

What is a promotion job?

Promotion job refers to fixed-term side work in which students represent brands, products or events in direct customer contact. Typical locations are trade fairs, supermarkets, shopping centres, airports and public spaces. Unlike a classic service job, a promotion job puts active communication first: explaining products, handing out samples, approaching prospects and capturing contact details.

How much do students earn in a promotion job in 2026?

Pay depends on the client, the location and the qualifications required. Reference values for promotion jobs in Germany in 2026:

According to Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Entgeltatlas 2025), promotion staff with certified foreign language skills earn on average 22 to 28 percent more than comparable workers without a language certificate - with an identical task profile. At international leading trade fairs such as Hannover Messe or IFA, English at B2 level is a basic requirement.

What are the tasks in a promotion job?

Promotion jobs vary by client and location. Typical activities:

Anyone who knows which area they want to work in should state it specifically when setting up a profile on ucm.jobs - that directly increases the chance of being booked by companies looking for exactly that qualification.

What requirements apply to a promotion job?

A promotion job does not require completed vocational training. What clients check in practice:

Sector knowledge is an advantage but not a condition. Clients train promotion staff before the assignment in a short briefing of 30 to 90 minutes on site.

Promotion job as a minijob or short-term employment - which fits better?

Most promotion jobs run as short-term employment or as a minijob - depending on the duration and frequency of the assignments.

Short-term employment (§ 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 SGB IV): a maximum of 70 working days or 3 months per calendar year, no earnings threshold, entirely free of social security contributions. Ideal for intensive assignment phases at multi-day trade fairs or during semester breaks.

Minijob (§ 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 SGB IV): a monthly earnings threshold of 603 euros since January 2026 (in 2025 it was 556 euros). No time limit. Subject to pension insurance, with exemption available on request. Suitable for recurring short assignments across the year.

The minijob threshold in 2026 is 603 euros per month (§ 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 SGB IV) and, at a minimum wage of 13.90 euros, corresponds to a maximum working time of approx. 43 hours per month. Source: Minijob-Zentrale, January 2026.

Both models can be combined: an ongoing minijob does not rule out short-term employment in parallel with a different employer. The two incomes are not added together for the earnings threshold (source: Studierendenwerke Deutschland, 2026).

How do you find your first promotion job without experience?

  1. Create a profile - enter all relevant information on ucm.jobs: language skills with levels, earlier service jobs, availability and cities.
  2. Know the trade fair dates - Germany holds approx. 180 trade fairs per year (AUMA, 2024). In early autumn - September to November - booking requests cluster particularly strongly.
  3. Take the briefing seriously - read the briefing in full before the assignment. Open questions go to the contact person on site, not to the stand in front of visitors.
  4. Ask for feedback actively - after the assignment, ask whether you can be considered for follow-up bookings. Anyone booked three times with a good rating earns on average 2.80 euros more per hour, according to a ucm.jobs analysis (2025).
  5. Keep the profile current - every new reference and every language directly increases your visibility with booking companies.

Frequently asked questions about promotion jobs for students

Can I take a promotion job as a BAföG recipient?

Yes - as long as your annual earnings from all sources do not exceed the BAföG allowance of approx. 6,270 euros in the approval period. Promotion assignments as short-term employment count towards annual earnings. If in doubt, ask the BAföG office in advance (source: Deutsches Studentenwerk, 2026).

Do I need a trade licence for a promotion job?

No. Anyone working as an employee with a regular employment contract and payroll via the Minijob-Zentrale needs no trade licence. It is only required if you work self-employed as a promoter on your own account - that is, without a fixed employer and contract.

How many hours may I work as a student in a promotion job?

During term time a maximum of 20 hours per week, so as not to endanger the working-student privilege. With short-term employment during semester breaks this limit does not apply - the time limits are 70 working days or 3 months per calendar year (§ 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 SGB IV). Full-time work is possible during the breaks (source: Bundesagentur für Arbeit, 2026).

Promotion jobs are one of the most direct routes for a student to build income quickly, gain communication experience and develop a network in the events sector. Anyone who sets up a complete profile on ucm.jobs now is directly bookable for the autumn trade fairs from September 2026.
